Spring Seminars for Helping Professionals Announced

Attention social workers, counselors, addiction professionals and anyone else in the helping professions! Marygrove College’s Division of Continuing Education and Career Enhancement and the Department of Social Work announce the Spring 2013 Applied Professional Education Seminars for behavioral health care workers and addiction specialists. These dynamic, highly interactive seminars will address the specific needs of helping professionals, espcially those working with addiction issues. These practical short forums are affordable – only $49 – and convenient. The seminars for Spring 2013 are:

We have seen an increasing focus on recovery communities as an effective tool in helping those suffering from addiction. National Recovery Month may be over but Marygrove College‘s commitment to developing addiction recovery professionals continues. The next workshop in the Applied Professional Education Seminars for Addiction Professionals (and others in the helping professions) series will meet on Friday, October 26th on the beautiful Marygrove College campus. David Sampson, CEO of Detroit’s highly regarded Mariners Inn will speak on The Recovery Community and Peer Support Services from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM.

Sampson is an expert on recovery communities through training and his work at Mariners Inn as both a therapist and administrator over the past 10 years. Mariners Inn is a 24 hour, residential, substance abuse treatment facility for adult, homeless, men of Southeastern Michigan.

Fall Seminars Help Promote National Recovery Month

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), September is National Recovery Month. The federal government in unison with non-profits, individuals, families, counselors, social workers and other helping professionals will use this month to promote the awareness of addictions and the often rocky road to recovery. SAMSHA says that 2.6 million Americans age 12 or over received treatment for an alcohol or drug problem in 2010. Marygrove College’s Department of Social Work and the Division of Continuing Education and Career Enhancement have teamed up to offer a series of seminars that will focus on addiction and recovery in support of this important campaign.

The first of Marygrove’s Applied Professional Education Seminars for Addiction Specialists (and others in the helping professions) will be offered during National Recovery Month. On Friday, September 28, 2012, from 9 AM to 12:30 PM, Michael Johnson, LMSW, a national expert, consultant and trainer in recovery will speak on Relapse Dynamics and the Offender.

Marygrove Pharmacy Technician Students See Success

Marygrove College has had 18 students complete its Pharmacy Technician program since the first round of interns completed their field experiences in the summer of 2010. These “graduates” are passing the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board’s national exam, finding jobs, continuing their educations, even volunteering as Pharmacy Technicians in local hospitals. Of the 13 contacted at press time, 7 are employed, 5 are enrolled in additional education (4 of them at Marygrove), 6 are nationally certified, and 3 are volunteering as pharmacy technicians at local hospitals.

Consider Takeisha Rucker who completed her field placement at Davis Pharmacy in Detroit, MI in the fall of 2011. Her practical experience with a local pharmacy gave her an advantage when looking for work in her hometown.

Workshop for the Helping Professionals Will Focus on Technology and Social Media

The final Friday Lunch & Learn workshop for behavioral health care providers for the 2011/2012 year will focus on the effective use of technology, especially social media, when working with clients. Marygrove College professor Dr. Fayetta Martin will lead participants through an examination of this this cutting edge issue facing anyone who works in the helping professions. The workshop, Technology, Social Media and Social Work will be held Friday, May 18 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on the Marygrove campus.

Marygrove to Offer Workshop on Sexual Assault Recovery

The next Marygrove College Friday Lunch & Learn Workshop for behavioral health care workers will focus on sexual assault recovery, especially alternative healing practices. If you work in the helping professions, you won’t want to miss this highly interactive workshop:

Political Leadership Campaign Training Workshop at Marygrove

Just in case you hadn’t noticed, the campaign season is on us again and the professional politicians aren’t the only ones with an important message. Margrove College’s Department of Social Work and Wayne State University have teamed up to offer a one-day workshop on how to organize a political campaign. On Saturday, March 24, 2012 on the Marygrove campus,
