According to a 2012 study by the Partnership at Drugfree.org and the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services 23.5 million adult Americans have had issues with alcohol or drug abuse – that’s one in ten adults! We have seen an increasing focus on recovery communities as an effective tool in helping those suffering from addiction. The next Applied Professional Education Seminar for Addiction Professionals (and others in the helping professions) will meet on Friday, March 15th on the beautiful Marygrove College campus. David Sampson, CEO of Detroit’s highly regarded Mariners Inn will speak on The Recovery Community and Peer Support Services from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM.
Sampson is an expert on recovery communities through training and his work at Mariners Inn as both a therapist and administrator over the past 10 years. Mariners Inn is a 24 hour, residential, substance abuse treatment facility for adult, homeless, men of Southeastern Michigan. The Detroit-based nonprofit, which operates in the Cass Corridor, was nominated as a finalist by Crain’s for being one of the best managed non-profits in 2011.
The Applied Professional Education Seminars for Addiction Professionals (formerly called the Friday Lunch & Learn Workshops for Behavioral Health Care Professionals) is jointly presented by Marygrove College’s Social Work Department and the Office of Continuing Education and Career Enhancement. The forums are designed to meet the needs of busy, cost sensitive professionals and consequently are scheduled for Friday mornings and only cost $49 each ($10 with student ID). Seminars are conducted in Marygrove’s historic Madame Cadillac Building. Each seminar has been approved by the Michigan Certification Board of Addiction Professionals (MCBAP) and the Michigan Social Work Continuing Education Collaborative (MSWCEC) for 3 CE hours toward continuing education requirements to maintain certification.
You won’t want to miss the other seminars in the series this spring as well; topcs will include the effects of homelessness and working with offenders. The applied Professional Education Seminars are dynamic and highly interactive and provide a great opportunity to network with other addiction specialists while earning CE hours and enhancing your career.
